The Migration-Control.Info Project is a transnational network of activists, journalists, translators, academics and anti-racist organisations from Europe and Africa. We document the externalisation of European migration control to third countries, especially in Africa. We work decentralized, self-organized and non-hierarchical.
What is
Externalized Migration Control
Externalization describes the outward shifting of borders and migration control. In the EUropean context, measures aimed at externalizing migration control have evolved continuously with the establishment of the Schengen zone in the early 1990s, resulting in a shared external border. Since then, the European Union and its member states have increasingly worked with non-Europaen, particularly African countries to control their border, to restrict and contain mobility. Thus, borders and their control shift increasingly southward while people’s right to movement and a safe life are being restricted or denied.
